OK. We know we are not 27, 34 or even 42. Should we start this business that we just can’t get out of our head or are we (gasp!) too old? I know you can’t believe I am even asking this question, but like the elephant in the middle of the room, we need to talk about this.
No, I probably can’t work a 30-year-old under the table–but, then, I don’t want to, either! I hope that in the ensuing years I have learned a thing or two about efficiency and effectiveness. Not everything worth doing is worth doing perfectly. Not everything needs to be done by me. Hard to believe, but I am not an expert in everything–I like to hire out for things I don’t like to do, too. But give me a task or project that taps into my Silver Vixen passion, and I have energy to spare!
Several of the women I have written about in my After 55 column started their business after this magical age. They are having a ball. So–if you want to feel alive, have fascinating challenges, feel the agony of defeat and the thrill of victory–start your own business. You will have great respect for yourself and your creativity, and others will, too! Have at it and let me know what you are doing!

I commented on a different conversation and I just wanted to say that you motivate me! I am hitting that magical age I’m 53 and just started a business, a flower shop business. I love doing it! from wedding flowers to just because I do everything in between and there after. I love my profession and job, but as I continue with my business I have found some obstacle hurdles at times, that I need to overcome. My friends are real content at retirement or working in a 9 to 5 job, I have never been that way, and now at my age I find myself starting a business with high hopes and dreams. Id love to talk to someone who thinks similar to me and interests. thanks for your posts.

Eva, thank you for the compliments! I truly appreciate them.
It is wonderful to hear the excitement and delight in your business. It can be a challenge to find like-minded people. A few years ago I had the same issue. I was a home based business and wanted to talk to businesswomen I respected about areas of mutual interest. So I started the Executive Women’s Forum in my town. It started out under the chamber of commerce, but eventually stepped away from that organization. I asked three women I knew and three I wanted to know if they would help design the group. The membership has changed over the years as people have moved on, sold businesses and retired, but it is still going without me. So I suggest you find other businesswomen (men, too, of course, if you like) and put together a once-a-month gathering–breakfast is usually good. Keep it business-oriented, on topic and on task, and you will find your group. Another thought is a MasterMind Alliance as described by Napoleon Hill in Think and Grow Rich, which I have written about. Again–good luck!

Bonnie,
I’m currently involved with Chamber as well and an organization called Women Business Professional BPW, and I’m starting to mingle with them, and became their treasurer, but I want more! I want to be the next Martha Stewart, or Oprah, or another household name that people will recognize. I want my brand and my delicate flowers to be recognized in my industry. Better yet have a flower shop at Macy’s!!! That would be AMAZING I know its hard work but keeping a vision and a dream alive I know that I can do it. I appreciate your comments and even though you have never met me, I promise to you to keep the dream alive and march on with the business that I know I can have! On that note thanks again and talk to you soon and like my slogan says, “We Have a Flower for that…” We truly are a universal flower shop.
Take care,
Eva Rosa
