I have been thinking a lot about the name of this blog. Imagine my surprise when I recently read women entrepreneurs 35-45 identified as “mature”. What are the 45-55 year olds? What are we? Geezers?
Last week I attended the AARP Women’s Leadership Circle Summit and asked a room full of beyond “mature” entrepreneurs for suggestions for the title of this blog. Here are their suggestions: Experience Counts, Aloft, Trailblazers, Unstoppable, Women Who Lead the Way. The excitement about having a positive column and blog about us ran high. Remember that AARP had to change the name of their magazine Modern Maturity because it didn’t resonate with a large segment of their market. It still doesn’t with the After 55 businesswoman. I wonder why the 35-45 year olds aren’t rallying for a change of classification…maybe After 55 is the new hot place to be. After all, we’re at the top of our game!

Bonnie – I’m really excited to learn from you on this blog. “Geezers”? LOL! Try “The Most Coveted Mentors on the Planet”!!

The Movers and Shakers
I love the double/triple meanings for both words. Not the most professional of blog titles but it just popped into my head. I love Bonnie’s website article about Respect. I took my “first after children” job because I was on a school board with two other women and 4 men all of whom were employed. One was an attorney with a large firm, the other a consultant/entrepreneur. Both enjoyed–in my opinion–much more respect from other board members, the administrators and teachers, parents and public than I a lowly housewife. I took a job which led to having my own company because I felt it would give me more respect in my board position. I swear it did and continued to lead to other leadership roles.

Bonnie – What a great way to connect with the After 55 “Geezers” … how about the “Ones with Wisdom”? I look forward to your future articles and blogs.

Bonnie,
I absolutely agree with (and appreciate) your article on entrepreneurship for women after 55. Once we’ve raised our children, had some “jobs,” served as competent volunteers and more, do we really want to take orders daily from someone younger than our son or daughter? Our amassed personal power cries out for us to be self-directed. We know risk and we know success. Why not take those skills to the marketplace?
I can’t wait to hear what you have to say next!

Bonnie -
Great blog – i’ve added you to my RSS feed. Ah, the media. I’ve never paid them much heed. Never found my age to be anything interesting, remarkable or to be ashamed about. As my dad says about birthdays “it beats the alternative.” Why not just Baby Boomers?
I personally feel our generation has a lot of catching up to do. We made such a splash, so much noise, about changing the world, and after “they” murdered our heroes & dangled materialism in front of us (Marianne Williamson’s observation, not mine – but I totally agree with her that that was the M.O. for us selling out) we went for it. Now I see many my age very self-congratulatory & I wonder “why?” I think it’s time we get back to changing the world for the better.
I personally feel that aligning with youth is the way to go. All of us working together can make a significant difference in a world that is at a turning point.
Thank you for your voice, Bonnie, and for encouraging our generation to ‘get to work’ – be it in the marketplace or the world.
I’ll look foward to your updates!!
